(Located at Webb City Cemetery in Webb City, MO)
Obelisks are one of the most popular types of Egyptian influenced markers. You can see them in just about any cemetery. They were considered tasteful with their pure uplifting lines and associated with ancient greatness. They were also able to be used in relatively small spaces and less costly than the larger and more elaborately sculpted monuments.
Here are a few of the larger Egyptian influences mausoleums I have found.
Austin Allen Mausoleum 1917
Located at Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, MO.
Mr. Allen was chief engineer of the production department of the Phillips Petroleum Company.
Charles Schifferdecker Mausoleum 1915
Located at Mount hope Cemetery in Webb City, MO.
Charles was a Capitalist at a Bank. The day of his funeral on Nov. 2, 1915, the whole City of Joplin closed down for his funeral. Charles was a generous philanthropist, he once said that he wished he knew when he would die, so that he could give away every cent and die penniless.
This is a panel from the door on the mausoleum.
Frank N. Tate Mausoleum 1907
Located at Bellefontaine in St. Louis, MO.
Tate was a prominent theater owner. Owning theaters in St. Louis, New York and Chicago.
You took some great pics. I am fascinated with mausoleums for some reason, but I find all the art and history fascinating. People may not think of cemetery monuments as art but it's there if you look. Unfortunately, many of the older monuments in smaller cemeteries that might have been really something in their heyday are gone from neglect, vandals and weather. Keep up the good work Mrs. T
