Megan Alessa Mallatt, 18, of Pittsburg, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in southwest Missouri. She was returning from Lexington, Ky.

She was born Oct. 26, 1985, at Joplin, Mo., to Dr. Keith and Brenda Ward Mallatt.

She lived in Pittsburg most of her life, having moved from Galena with her family in 1992.

She attended George Nettels Elementary School and Pittsburg Middle School. At the time of her death, she was a senior at Pittsburg High School. She also was attending classes at Pittsburg State University. She was an academic scholar on the all-A honor roll and the holder of a Renaissance Gold Card. She had maintained an all-A plus grade point average since her freshman year. She was president of National Honor Society, executive vice president of Student Government and president of Spanish Club. She was Pom-Pon team captain, a varsity letter holder with Key Club since her freshman year and varsity captain and letter holder of the 2003 sub-state championship volleyball team. She also received the Sportsmanship Dragon Award and was the 2003 PHS football homecoming first attendant.

In addition to her academic achievements, she was active in the Pittsburg community as a member of Junior Leadership Crawford County and a volunteer for YouthFriends. She was recognized as a November student of the month. She also volunteered for Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, Meals on Wheels, the community Thanksgiving dinner, Food for Heart, Relay for Life and Adopt-a-Family.

She was a member of the Jodi Phillips Dance Company. She had been involved in ballet, jazz and tap dance since the age of 4. She danced with the Tulsa Ballet Company production of "The Nutcracker" and attended the Dance Olympus in New York City just before Sept. 11, 2001. She was selected by MTV to speak on the Carson Daly Show. She also modeled and did commercial work for area businesses and bridal fairs.

Her hobbies included water skiing, riding wave runners, snow skiing and working out.

She planned to attend the University of Kansas to pursue a career in Optometry.

Survivors include her parents of the home; one brother, Ryan Mallatt of Pittsburg; her maternal grandparents, Terry and Lois Ward of Galena; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, John and Evelyn Mallatt of Galena; and one uncle, Jerry Mallatt.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium with the Rev. James Sukraw officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway, where friends also may call after 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

...Megan Alessa Mallatt was dead, as the result of a car accident. She was returning from watching her b/f Warren's basketball game on Valentine's Day in Kentucky at his college. It was just Megan and Warren's father, and at 2:40 a.m. on Sunday morning, Warren's father fell asleep at the wheel. The truck swerved off the road, into a culvert, flipped, and landed upside down near a driveway. Megan was partially ejected through a window (she hadn't been wearing her seatbelt), and Warren's father lived. Megan was killed almost instantly. Luckily, Megan had been asleep during the accident, therefore she wasn't aware of what was happening to her, and more than likely felt no pain.

PHS dedicates Megan Mallatt Activities Center

When Megan Mallatt was a member of the Pittsburg High School pom pon dance squad, she and other spirit squad members had to practice in the halls or the commons area. "They never got to practice in the gym," noted her mother, Brenda Mallatt, because PHS had only one gym then and it was crowded with athletes who also had to practice.

All that has changed now because of the nearly 35,000-square foot Megan Mallatt Activity Center, named for the PHS senior who died in an automobile accident Feb. 15, 2004.

Family members and hundreds of friends gathered Sunday for the formal dedication of the $2.5 million center.

Jeff Elliott, president of the USD 250 Foundation board, served as master of ceremonies, with Dan Moss delivering the invocation and PHS Encore singing the national anthem.

Speakers included many who knew Mallatt, including family friend Ron Marrone, who told of Saturday afternoons when she played with his daughters.

"They would play dress-up as I watched Saturday afternoon football, and they'd go into my wife's closet, then come down for a fashion show," Marrone said. "Then my wife would come home, go upstairs and yell back down, ‘I thought you were watching the girls!' Thanks for the memory, Megan."

He also read a statement from the Mallatt family — parents Keith and Brenda Mallatt and brother Ryan Mallatt — expressing their thanks to all who helped make the building a reality.

"Megan's brother, Ryan, said how great it would be if people could feel the way Megan felt every day," Marrone said. "She loved her family, the other students and her friends, and all other she came into contact with during her brief life."

Mary Packard, Mallatt's volleyball coach, recalled the talented young athlete. "Megan represented volleyball in the best possible way," she said.

Merle Clark, PHS teacher and football coach, said the two words that came to his mind were pride and flexibility. Physical education teachers had to be flexible because of the school's limited space.

"We might have three classes in the gym at the same time," he said. "And the addition of the second gym in the center makes more room in our weight room, which is the most widely used room in the building. It's not just the athletes who use the weight room, but many other students as well."

The school now has a facility that all can be proud of. "I know that Megan is very proud of it, too," Clark said.

Doug Hitchcock, PHS activities/athletic director, noted that PHS was formerly one of the only high schools in its category to have a single gymnasium. Now it is one of the only schools to have a separate room for its spirit squad.

And it's a very well designed room, according to Rhonda White, PHS teacher and coach. "Before, the spirits squads would be in the halls and they would position themselves in front of the office windows and hope to see their reflections in the glass," she said. "The new room has tiered mirrors, so the cheerleaders scan see themselves practice their stunts, as well as full-length mirrors for the dances. We also have our own locker room."

Beth Simpson introduced the new PHS pom pon squad, which did a routine.

Gary Price, USD 250 superintendent of schools, formally accepted the center, which was built with private donations, on behalf of the district. "This is a great day in the life of the community and this school," he said.

"It's great to get to this point," Keith Mallatt said following the ceremony.

"I know that Megan is in heaven and she's absolutely loving this," added her mother. "At the same time, she'd probably be a little embarrassed because, despite all the things she was involved in, Megan was a shy person."

Man Drowns in Strip Pit East of City

Ronald Burdick, 22, drowned in Mackie Clemens pits two and one-half miles east of Broadway on Quincy about 3:20 Monday afternoon. He fell into about 30 feet of water while helping a small boy up a bank.

Burdick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Burdick, 510 N. Joplin, was one of five persons in a swimming party which was spending the afternoon at the pits. The small boy the victim was helping was unidentified and a member of another swimming party.

While the drowning occurred about 3:20pm the body was recovered at about 4:35pm after dragging operations by the fire departments.

Burdick was born Oct. 20, 1943 in Pittsburg and was a graduate of PHS.
