Located at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
I have looked at this photo a million times and I still can't decide if it is male or female. I am leaning towards male because it has no apparent breast and it's face is very masculine. And look at it's feet they look like Big Foot's feet. What do you think?

If I had to choose, I'd call it male -- and a rare find. :-)
ReplyDeleteEven HIS hands are manly and those wings where made to lift a much heftier frame than that of a females.......
ReplyDeleteFrom Art History 101 and other art experience my guess is definitely male. The face, size of the neck, pecs not breasts, the masculine hands, leg proportion and shape, plus as you mentioned the feet. JLK
ReplyDeleteIn second look the fact that the angel is holding a scroll over parts that would be unangel-like to reveal and his chest/hip proportions indicate male. JLK
ReplyDeleteI think, biblically speaking, angels are supposed to be neither male nor female... which would explain why so many of them are hard to "figure out".
ReplyDeleteActually Mt 22.30 makes it clear that angels do not marry. It does NOT say angels have no gender. Whenever gender is assigned to an angel in Scripture, it is most often male. But there are examples where they are stated to be female. ex. Zechariah 5:9-11
