THE VAUGHANS, Volume 1, authored by Mickey Weise Vaughan… In part:

On 10 March 1843, Ben bought 160 acres of land from Daniel VAUGHAN near Hindsville, AR. He later moved to Huntsville, AR and finally settled in the Clifty, AR community about nineteen miles north of Huntsville. One of the houses in which he lived is still standing. (1977)

Benjamin was Sheriff of Madison County, AR from 1848 to 1858, served as Representative from Madison Co. to the AR State General Assembly in 1858, Sheriff and Assessor of Madison Co. from 1867 to 1868, Representative from Madison, Marion and Carroll Counties in 1868, Assessor from 1872 to 1876 and Sheriff from 1876 to 1878.

While Ben was serving a term as assessor, his duties carried him to Berryville and back to Huntsville, AR by way of what is now Eureka Springs, AR. At that time, Eureka was just a road through a heavily wooded area.

Ben was known throughout the county as quite a colorful character while he served as Sheriff.
